Plains Township is a township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania in the greater metropolitan area of the city of Wilkes-Barre. The population was 10,906 at the 2000 census. Plains Township is the location of Pennsylvania's first casino, Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. It is also the birthplace of Chicago White Sox hall of famer Ed Walsh.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 13.6 square miles (35.1 km²), of which, 13.3 square miles (34.4 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) of it (2.14%) is water. It extends from the Susquehanna River in the northwest to the north slope of Wyoming Mountain in the southeast. Its villages include Hudson, Llewellyn Corners (also in Bear Creek Township,) Midvale, Plains, Plainsville, and Westminster.
Plains Township's numbered routes include Interstate 81, Route 115, Route 309, and Route 315. Interstate 476 crosses the eastern portion of Plains Township between the Wilkes-Barre and Wyoming Valley interchanges with 115 and 315, respectively. Main Street and River Street cross the populous NW portion of the township between Wilkes-Barre and Pittston. 309 follows the Cross Valley Expressway from the junction of 81 and 115 to the West Side communities and also has an interchange with River Street in the township.

The racetrack itself is as of 2015 now called The Downs At Mohegan Sun Pocono.

Mohegan Sun acquired the Pocono Downs racetrack on January 25, 2005 in a $280 million purchase of the Pocono Downs Racetrack from Penn National Gaming.^[1] Mohegan Sun renamed the property 'Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs,' and began a major expansion. It began operation in November 2006 as the first slots casino in the state of Pennsylvania.

In January 2010, then Governor Ed Rendell signed a bill to legalize table games in Pennsylvania. The Mohegan Sun casino was among the first to receive approval for table games, and planned to hire 600 new employees for the expansion. Table games began operation on July 13, 2010.

In November 2013, Mohegan Sun opened a hotel that is connected to the casino floor.

The casino constructed a 1,130 sq ft (105 m²) sportsbook that contains a video wall, 7 sports betting terminals, and 3 teller windows.^[5] The Unibet Sportsbook at Mohegan Sun Pocono opened on October 5, 2019, with former National Football League and Penn State linebacker LaVar Arrington in attendance for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.^[6] Unibet launched online gambling and online sports betting on November 12, 2019.^[7]
